El Segundo Skatepark Redesign

2017

The City of El Segundo was an early adopter of building skate parks for the community. The original park dates back to 2003, and while skateboarding and the construction techniques of parks have progressed, this one has been left behind. The skatepark’s current usage is generally confined to a narrow back-and-forth path due to it’s dead end lines, poor quality flow, and limited construction knowledge.

The new design addresses a number of issues including multiple rider flow, component placement, addition of a bowl, and support for all levels of skateboarding in the community. Beautification from Grand Ave., the introduction of green space within the skatepark, and the existing drainage plan were all considerations.

Jan 1, 2020 update—The City of El Segundo posted a Recreation & Parks Needs Assessment Request for Proposals (RFP) on December 10, 2020. Proposals will be due January 21, 2021. The Needs Assessment will pay special attention to the Teen Center/Skate Park Complex, including the Teen Center, Skate Park, and outdoor basketball court.
